I have seen the surname Whelan spelled in many different ways. Occasionally, it is spelled 2 or more ways in a single document.

Nice to meet a new genea-blogger! I have Weallans (Welleans, Wellans, Wellands - and all the "e" and "ea" permutations) that trace back to Holystone, Northumberland Co., England. The Church of England records for the Chapelry of Holystone have been microfilmed by the Family History Library and date back to the early 1700s. I have an email address for Frank Whillans of Melbourne, Australia who has been collecting all variants in a one-name study, if you ever want to contact him.
